Sad to say that summer is over in the Northeast. I cannot believe that we are already in mid-October! As the fall breeze begins to creep in, it’s that time of the year to trade in our sundresses for cozy sweaters and long pants. If you’re struggling to put together a new wardrobe for this fall, I’ve listed some popular trends and ways to style them. To make it even easier for you, I shared links so you can shop the outfit shown in the images!
One of my favorite trends right now is puffy shoulders. This look adds a little flair to your basic sweater and instantly becomes a statement piece in your wardrobe. Current Air makes the sweater I am wearing to the right. This rust color screams fall, and it’s the perfect sweater to wear wine tasting or to any fall activity. I paired it with black coated jeans that are a great staple to have in your wardrobe. What I love about a good pair of black coated jeans is that they make any outfit edgier. Pair them with a sweater, and your look instantly goes from cozy to trendy. Wear them with a sequin or metallic top, and you’re ready for a night out!
Here, we have the strong puffy shoulders trend featured in the runway of Alexander McQueen. This shoulder trend was seen back in the ’80s when women joining the workforce started to become the norm. The strong shoulders were a way to add masculinity and show that women can be tough. It only makes sense that this trend is making a comeback since we see several women movements in recent years.
Rachel Parcell is one of my favorite influencers who has a clothing line at Nordstrom. She has such a sophisticated and feminine style, which I love, and I honestly wished I owned all of her pieces. This dress here is a classic little black dress with puffy shoulders. It is a great staple to have in your wardrobe because it’s stylish and yet conservative, perfect to wear to a business event or family function.
What screams fall more than plaid? A plaid shirt or dress should be an essential in every woman’s closet for fall. This year we continue to see plaid making a strong presence because it’s super trendy on blazers, pants, and skirts. Plaid is seen often on runways, especially in outerwear. Check out the runway releases by Christian Dior, Stella McCartney, and Dolce & Gabbana shown below. They used plaid in their outwear outfits, which can give you creative ideas on how to wear yours.
Bella Dahl makes the dress I am wearing in the pictures shown below. I love this flannel material because it’s super soft and cozy. I paired it with an open toe black suede bootie and the burgundy lacquer Mz Wallace bag to add a pop of color. You can also pair this dress with over the knee boots or sneakers for a more casual look. As for accessories, gold link chains have also been trendy this fall. I’ve added a gold plated chain to this outfit to add some spunk to my fall look.
Another pair of my favorite plaid dresses are shown below. Both are great options for a day out in the city. The gray dress from Forever 21 would look great with sneakers or even stylish oxfords. Click on the link to shop these looks!
Since plaid has been so popular when it comes to outerwear, I was determined to find the perfect plaid blazer. This orange, yellow, and blue blazer is exactly what I was searching for! Blazers and suits are hot at the moment, even outside of work. With its beautiful fall tones, this blazer mixes a neutral with some blare of color and big gold buttons to add that miliary edginess to a conservative and traditional piece. I love the way Nordstrom has styled it, but I think that this blazer can easily be worn with jeans and a pair of mules.
During the fall and winter, I am all about being cozy and comfortable. I LOVE big scarves that can be worn as a wrap. This one featured here is from Nordstrom, and I adore the soft colors used in the plaid pattern.
You can’t go through fall without a stylish plaid shirt. Upgrade your traditional plaid flannel with this playful orange and white piece from Anthropologie. The ruffles around the shoulder area add a touch of femininity. The black and white plaid sweater on the bottom right is from H&M. It’s great for those cooler weekend days where you want to be comfortable and classy, perfect for a day of family fun at the orchard. Shop both looks by clicking on the links below!
Animal print continues to rule the runways! As we get closer to the end of 2019, cheetah print and python print are still a huge trend. Now we have started to see a lot more of a tiger print like the coat on the Max Mara runway below. Bottega Veneta, Max Mara, and Dolce and Gabbana all featured animal prints from head to toe. Remember that these styles can be worn as clothing or as accessories!
This fall, I’m really into the python printed skirts. In the picture on the bottom left, I am wearing a vegan leather skirt in the python print with a simple black long sleeve top, black open- toe booties, and gold chain necklace. The outfit on the bottom right is very similar, but the skirt is more of a pencil skirt, and it’s midi-length for a more refined look. Click on the links below the photos to shop these outfits.
The cheetah print top shown on the left is from H&M and includes the puffy sleeve trend that we discussed above. It makes the perfect blouse to take you from the keyboard to a martini.
Leopard is all the rage this fall. If you were looking for the perfect leopard sweater, then look no further! This sweater is great to wear on the weekend with denim.
Another versatile piece shown here can be worn around the office or for the night out. I love investing in these types of dresses because I feel like I can wear these pieces to most occasions without feeling underdressed. It has a bold tiger print with balloon sleeve detail. I would pair this with thigh-high boots or black open-toe booties.
These python print cigarette pants will have the whole office buzzing! Pair them with a pump or a stylish mule and a simple black top or sweater, and you’re all good to go. For a nighttime look, accessorize with a leather jacket and a statement necklace.
Don’t ever lose your sparkle! Sequins and metallic fabric are making a come back this fall and winter. In the outfit here, I am wearing a black metallic short sleeve dress by Current Air. A fashionable and classy piece, perfect for any night out! I love the ruffle details on the sleeves and the skirt that spice up the look.
Sequins and lamé fabric were highly prominent on the runway this fall. Below are looks from Burberry, Dolce and Gabbana, and Michael Kors. I can see this trend continuing in the winter, especially during the holidays.
If you’re feeling extra sparkly, this fabulous gold top below is a perfect look for both the day or a night out. For a nighttime look, wear it with your coated black jeans and a simple pump or boot. Since the top is a statement on its own, I would pair it with simple jewelry. The black lamé top is another great option for a night out. It’s very similar to the Current Air dress that I am wearing in the photo above.
We saw bell-shaped sleeves last year, but this year we see a lot of balloon sleeves on tops and dresses. Its open sleeves make it a comfortable fit for the fall. Here, I am wearing a Current Air dress in a mauve print paired with taupe open-toe booties. This dress is one of those dresses that are so versatile that you can wear to many different occasions. You can wear this to work and go out for the night in the same outfit.
Sleeves have been all the talk the last couple of seasons. We’ve seen a ton of bell sleeves within the previous years. This year, the typical bell sleeves have transformed into a balloon sleeve, bringing back an old school renaissance look. Below are three looks from the runways of Bottega Veneta, Versace, and Gucci.
Balloon sleeves are a fun way to add some flare to your traditional sweater. Check out these two styles below.
This balloon-sleeve sweater-dress from Nordstrom is an excellent choice for those days that you want to look sexy and classy by slipping into a dress. Pair this outfit with a stylish pair of tights and booties. This style of dress also comes in black!
I love this cranberry dress shown here because it’s both flirtatious and posh. The ruffles and the peephole make the dress feminine and fun, while the balloon sleeves and embroidery details that make it refined. I love this vibrant cranberry color for this time of the year because it looks great on all skin tones. Wear this style out on a date night or when you have a girl’s night out.
This balloon sleeve dress with the fall color palette and the beautiful flower print is from H&M. You can belt this dress to give you a more defined waistline and add jewelry to add some sparkle. Wear it with open-toe booties or stylish oxfords, depending on your desired look.
